In WHITE TRASH, Makos displays his seeming dis-regard for human and social values, describing a strange (and often sordid) terrain, inhabited by the prophets of an ambisexual generation tolling a future of catatonia. Makos himself has said, regarding the nature of his art, that “the camera is a knife. And photography is an act of violence.”

As Debbie Harry notes, Makos was the first photographer to record the convergence of the uptown and downtown worlds, and his book figuratively represents these ideals. White Trash has achieved seminal status due to its raw portraits of the many great figures of it’s era, such as Patti Smith, Richard Hell, Blondie. Andy Warhol, Man Ray, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Divine, Iggy Pop, Grace Jones and many others.
