Trained under Jaromír Funke at the Prague School of Graphic Arts and later at FAMU, Hochová worked throughout the communist period, photographing not only political upheaval and figures of the establishment and dissident movements, but above all the lives of ordinary people on the margins of society — the elderly, children with disabilities, the nuns who cared for them. Her approach was direct, unsentimental and deeply humane, working exclusively in black and white with available light. The second volume in a self-financed trilogy published with Kuklík, preceded by Deset, dvacet, třicet, už jdu (1994) and followed by Síla věku (1996).
