Dirty Windows collects Merry Alpern’s clandestine shots captured through her Wall Street apartment window during the winter of 1993–94. Using a telephoto lens, she documented a hidden brothel across the street—people entering, leaving, dressing, doing drugs.
The work sparked controversy, with Alpern losing an NEA grant before museums stepped in to exhibit the series. Dirty Windows remains a rare, unflinching record of voyeurism, surveillance, and the female gaze in early-’90s New York.
