Two atypical series brought together for Ethridge's first exhibition in Japan, Goodnight Flowers, at Rat Hole Gallery in 2009. Black and white photographs of feral horses on Cumberland Island, Georgia, taken in 2007, are paired with Becher-school studies of flowers made with a pinhole camera in the mid-1990s. Both subjects are well-worn territory in photography and painting, which makes the pairing all the more unexpected. What holds them together is a pronounced stillness and an unguarded tenderness toward the subject that sits at odds with Ethridge's usual commercial detachment.
