Pinckers and De Bruyn document the lives of transgender women in Thailand, from sex workers and performers to women at various stages of surgical transition. The project — originally made as a dummy in 2011 — uses deliberate staging, artificial lighting and careful choreography while leaving room for improvised and unpredictable elements. Disposable cameras were also distributed to subjects, and their own photographs are incorporated into the sequence. The work uses the gender crisis of its subjects as a metaphor for the identity crisis facing contemporary documentary photography. Signed and dedicated by Pinckers.
