    Published by Schirmer/Mosel, 1993.

The original German edition of Struth's now-canonical series, photographed between 1989 and 1992 in major museums including the Louvre, the Prado and the Art Institute of Chicago. Large-format colour photographs show visitors in the act of looking at paintings, collapsing multiple layers of perception — the viewer looks at a photograph of people looking at a painting. Belting's essay addresses the complex relationship between photography and painting, and the museum as a site where both are simultaneously consumed. Includes exhibition history and bibliography. Cited in Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II.

Essay by Hans Belting. Text in German.
