New Documentary was released alongside Takashi Homma’s first museum retrospective, shown at Tokyo Opera City (2011), 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art Kanazawa, and MIMOCA Marugame .

The book covers seven of Homma’s major projects from the previous decade—Trails, Tokyo and My Daughter, Widows, M, Together: Wildlife Corridors in Los Angeles, Seeing Itself, and Short Hope—along with a section recreating his editorial work . It blends installation views and project excerpts, highlighting his neutral, observational style across architecture, landscapes, suburbs, and portraits.

The design interweaves photographs, exhibition sketches, and photobook references to mirror the touring show’s structure and Homma’s methodical approach . Essays and commentary by Noi Sawaragi, Elein Fleiss, Mike Mills, Francesco Zanot, and others, appear in bilingual Japanese and English.

New Documentary crystallizes Homma’s “dry, clinical” lens and his quiet but rigorous interrogation of the ordinary textual guide to his evolving voice in Japanese documentary photography.
