Stern Fotografie Portfolio No. 64

Oversize survey drawing from across Gilden's career. Coney Island, Haiti, the closed world of Irish horse trading, the yakuza. Gilden works close and with flash, making the subject aware of the camera, collapsing the distance between photographer and stranger in a way that has no real equivalent in street photography. The resulting images carry an intimacy that shouldn't be possible in public space. Colour and black and white throughout.
