Originally published on the occasion of the exhibition Nan Goldin 1972–1992 at daadGalerie, Berlin, September/October 1992. Goldin's second book and her declaration of love to the drag queens she had lived among since the early 1970s, first in Boston and later in New York. The photographs span two decades of friendship, glamour, struggle and self-invention, from early black and white portraits through to the saturated colour work of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Goldin framed the book not as a document of suffering but of liberation.
