VB 08-36: Vanessa Beecroft Performances
Hardcover | first edition | 176 pages
Published by Hatje Cantz, 2000.
The first monograph devoted to Beecroft's performances, documenting 29 works staged internationally between 1994 and 1998. In each, groups of young women — stripped of individuality through identical underwear, wigs and body paint — were directed to hold still, silent poses within institutional settings, producing a sustained tension between fashion spectacle, performance art and the politics of looking. Beecroft has since become widely associated with the large-scale presentations she staged for Kanye West's Yeezy label, though her core practice is rooted in the work collected here. Hickey's introductory essay situates Beecroft's tableaux within a broader history of the painted female figure.
